How to Layer Necklaces Without the Tangle

Three lengths, one metal tone and a little spacing are all it takes. Here is how our stylists build a layered look that stays put from morning coffee to dinner.

How to Layer Necklaces Without the Tangle

A good necklace stack looks effortless, but there is a little math behind it. Most layered looks that work follow the same three rules: different lengths, a clear starting point, and chains that don't fight each other.

Start with your anchor piece

Pick the necklace you'd wear on its own, like a diamond tennis necklace, a solitaire pendant or a bold chain. Everything else is built around it. If your anchor sits high, like a choker, add longer layers below it. If it's a pendant at 18 inches, frame it with one shorter and one longer chain.

Space your lengths about two inches apart

Standard US necklace lengths make this easy:

  • 14–16 in. sits at the base of the neck (choker)
  • 18 in. lands on the collarbone, the most popular length
  • 20–22 in. falls just below the collarbone
  • 24 in. and up reaches the neckline of most tops

A 16, 18 and 20-inch stack is a safe first combination. Each chain gets its own space, and none of them hide the others.

Mix textures, keep the metal consistent

Pairing a fine cable chain with a paperclip link or a row of diamonds adds interest without looking busy. If you're new to layering, stay in one gold color. Once you're comfortable, yellow and white gold together look intentional when each metal shows up at least twice.

Jeweler's tip: fasten the longest chain first and the shortest last. The clasps settle in order and are far less likely to twist together.

Keep them from tangling

Chains of different weights tangle less, because the heavier one pulls straight. A layering clasp (a single clasp with two or three rings) keeps everything spaced evenly at the back. When you take them off, lay each necklace flat or hang it separately. Never drop the stack into a pouch together.

Where to start

Begin with two pieces you already love and add a third once you know how they sit. Browse our necklaces and pendants, or book a virtual appointment and a jeweler will put a stack together with you on video.
