Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds: What Actually Differs

Same sparkle, same hardness, very different price tags. A plain-English look at how lab-grown and mined diamonds compare, and how to choose between them.

Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds: What Actually Differs

It's the question we hear most often in our showroom. The short answer: a lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. The differences come down to origin, price and what matters most to you.

They look and wear the same

Lab-grown diamonds are pure carbon with the same crystal structure as diamonds from the earth. They score a 10 on the hardness scale, they sparkle the same way, and even trained jewelers need lab equipment to tell them apart. Cut quality affects how a diamond looks far more than where it came from.

Both are graded the same way

Every certified diamond, lab-grown or natural, is graded on the 4Cs: cut, color, clarity and carat. Look for a report from an independent lab such as IGI or GIA. The report notes whether the stone is lab-grown, and the grade is laser-inscribed on the girdle of most certified stones.

The real difference is price

For the same size and quality, a lab-grown diamond typically costs a fraction of a mined one. Many couples use that difference to go up in carat weight, choose a better cut grade, or put more of the budget toward the setting.

Value and resale

Natural diamonds hold more of their resale value, though no diamond is a guaranteed investment. If you think of the ring as something to wear for a lifetime rather than to sell, resale usually matters less than how the stone looks on your hand.

Our advice: decide on your shape and budget first, then compare a lab-grown and a natural stone side by side. Most people know within a minute which one they want.
